Good Nutrition By Josephine Goffe-Gardner, RN, ND
Eating is a vital component of our daily life. Eating food in the right proportion and the best quality is important to achieving good health.
Since the commencement of the 20 century there has been a significant change in our eating habits. We have replaced the cheaper natural type of food such as fresh fruit and vegetables for the more expensive processed foods which in general are unhealthy These changes present challenges to our health especially as it relates to the availability and proper use of food that will promote a healthy lifestyle.
Food choices have become increasingly important and because of our fast moving society food preparation time is also important. For this reason there is increased need for cooked or pre-cooked food. This has given rise to the processed and fast food industries. In the 21 century it has become increasingly acceptable to dine out. Because of this trend, it has become increasingly important for us to understand the role that nutrition plays in maintaining a good health.

The more informed we are, the better we are at making those informed choices as it relates to buying, preparing and consuming food. Healthy eating is one of the keys to healthy living, which in turn prevents you from getting certain diseases. Unhealthy eating habits often lead to diseases some of which includes: obesity, constipation hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and degenerative disease.
While some foods are better than others there is no single food or food group that has all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are required. Eating a variety of different foods is therefore essential. You should also eat in moderation. Eating in moderation means that you are eating neither to much nor too little of any food or nutrient. Too much of some nutrients, while eating too little of other nutrients can lead to many nutrient deficiencies and low body mass.
The minimum recommended daily caloric intake is 1000 to 1800 which is suitable for 4 to 6 year old child. The average female daily calorie intake should be 2200 per day. The highest daily calorie intake is 2900 for an active male. Your body needs the right balance of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, which are the three main components of nutrition. Daily dietary intake must include the recommended daily 3 to 5 servings of vegetables and 2 to 4 servings of fruit.
