SOME FUNDAMENTS OF GOOD HEALTH By Josephine Goffe-Gardner, RN, ND
The foundation of good health primarily involves three bodily systems. 1. hormone/immune system 2. digestive system 3. detoxification system
All three systems are important to our state of health. If either of these systems should go out of balance, it can affect the other two systems. The most important of these three, is the hormone/immune system. Should it become weakened we become more prone to getting infections by bacteria, viruses and even parasites.
The digestive system is the second most important of these systems. The digestive system is needed for the process of digesting our foods. We must properly digest, absorb and assimilate the nutrients from the food we eat. If the digestive system becomes defective, it then affects all orally taken treatments and therapies. These treatments and therapies will not then be effective.
Also poor eating habits and/or low levels of enzymes can cause the food we eat not to be digested properly. When digestive enzymes are at a low level in the body, our immune system is affected. When this occurs our bodies go into overdrive to make digestives enzymes to digest our foods and may not be able to make the hormones and enzymes needed for our immune system to be at its optimum state of health. Supplemental digestive enzymes are now available to help those with digestive systems that are out of balance.

Finally, the detoxification system is also vital to good health. The major detoxification organ is the liver. The major function of the liver is to eliminate toxins from the body. If the liver is unable to eliminate toxins, then the toxins will accumulate in the blood stream and be circulated to all parts of our bodies, which may result in damage to our organ(s) and/or other bodily systems. Dr. William G. Timmins, ND has said that the liver is like a washing machine. It takes the dirt and grime out of our bodies and discards the waste.
A build up of toxins can adversely affect our nervous system, mental function and also lead to fatigue, depression and anxiety.
A good health assessment should begin with an evaluation of the hormone/immune system. This system relies heavily on the adrenal gland to regulate it properly. The adrenal gland produces the hormone de-hydro-epi-andros-terone (DHEA). This hormone helps in the production of the sex hormones.
Symptoms that can indicate that our adrenal gland is under stress are fatigue, depression, sweet cravings, decreased sex drive, insomnia, poor memory, anxiety, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Other symptoms of a weakened immune system are recurrent infections, unexplained nervousness or irritability, inability to lose or gain weight and finally, joint and/or muscle pain.
